What you need to know

Silage clamps are structures that are increasingly of interest to the Environment Agency (EA and SEPA).

Silage clamp leachate when not properly handled is extremely harmful to watercourses and has an aggressive acidity, which over long periods will erode any surface it meets.

Silage clamp leachate in its neat form has the potential to be one of the most environmentally damaging liquids on your farm.

SSAFO Regulations

Silage clamps in the UK must meet the Environment Agency Silage, Slurry and Agricultural Fuel Oil (SSAFO) regulations.

You can read more about the SSAFO regulations by clicking on the following link:

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/storing-silage-slurry-and-agricultural-fuel-oil

This is a comprehensive set of regulations that includes:

  • The minimum environmental standard for silage clamps in the UK. This covers any new or significantly altered clamps since March 1991. This will include nearly all clamps being used in the UK today
  • The expectations for the sighting of new clamps
  • The design of new clamps
  • The requirement for the leachate handling / drainage systems for clamps
  • The minimum notice period to inform the EA prior to the construction of a clamp

What if I break the rules?

Failure to comply with the SSAFO regulations can be costly and will often lead to fines, court action and even prosecution.

There have been several recently documented cases of silage clamps failing and polluting water ways which have been subject to significant financial penalties.
